SUMMARY:VISIONARY Webinar: Individual Decisions and Collective Action in Agricultural Water Management: Behaviour\, Technology & Governance
DESCRIPTION:Agricultural water management and governance face the challenge of integrating individual behaviors while building collective agreements among farmers\, public administrations\, and other social actors. This webinar brings together recent research on this topic\, examining how behavioral factors influence the reconciliation of environmental and productive objectives in agriculture as well as the use of water-saving technologies. It also analyses the challenges involved in building effective systems of collective water governance across different European contexts. The session offers new empirical evidence and interdisciplinary perspectives on water\, technology\, and collective action\, while also encouraging reflection on the development of research projects in these fields of knowledge. \nTopics & Speakers: \nBehavioral factors in AES uptake for water quality improvements\nKahsay Haile Zemo & Mette Termansen\, University of Copenhagen. \nEffects of Irrigation Technologies in Water Use: Evidence from a Field Experiment with Spanish Farmers\nJuana Castro\, ICTA\, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. \nReconciling Centralized Fertigation and Organic Farming in Spain: Assessment of Collective Strategies and Governance Dilemmas\nCarles Sanchis-Ibor\, CIRAM\, Universitat Politècnica de València. \nStrengthening collaboration in a non-collaborative environment: the case of sustainable water management communities in Hungary\nGabor Király\, Institute of Agricultural Economics\, AKI. \nGroundwater governance for a healthy and just social-ecological system? The experience of two researchers who resisted the straitjacket of a European project\nMarta Varanda & Marta Nieto\, ISEG\, Universidade de Lisboa. \nFormatOnline Webinar\, Thursday\, May 28\, 11:00–12:00 CET

SUMMARY:Cross-Country Visit to Poland
DESCRIPTION:The cross-country visit to Poland\, organised by the University of Warsaw\, will focus on food provision systems and their transformation toward greater sustainability and resilience. Covering the entire value chain – from cooperatives and organic markets to logistics hubs – the program will explore how food is produced\, distributed\, and accessed across different institutional and market settings. It will also address the role of organic farming within these systems\, with particular attention to its potential to support environmentally friendly practices\, local economies\, and consumer trust. Through site visits\, stakeholder meetings\, and discussions with practitioners\, participants will gain insights into both the opportunities and challenges faced by actors along the supply chain. Particular attention will be given to identifying practical solutions for shortening supply chains\, improving coordination between producers and consumers\, and strengthening overall efficiency\, transparency\, and sustainability of the food system. \nAcross all three visits\, participants will observe contrasting yet interconnected models of food provisioning: from large-scale wholesale distribution (Bronisze)\, through cooperative and participatory retail structures (Kooperatywa “Dobrze”)\, to urban organic markets (BioBazar). Together\, these cases illustrate different configurations of the food value chain and provide a basis for discussing how supply chains can be shortened\, made more transparent\, and oriented toward sustainability and resilience. \nTo register\, please contact wm.zawadzki(at)uw.edu.pl \nPreliminary programme \nDAY 0 (WEDNESDAY) – May 27\n19.00-21.00 Welcome dinner (optional) \nDAY 1 (THURSDAY) – May 28\n07.00 Meeting point and departure preparation\n07.00-08.00 Introductory briefing and transfer to Bronisze\n08.00-10.00 Visit to Bronisze Wholesale Market\n10.00-11.00 Transfer to Kooperatywa “Dobrze” and coffee (to go)\n11.00-12.00 Visit to Kooperatywa “Dobrze”\n12.00-13.30 Transfer to BioBazar market and Lunch\n13.30-14.30 Visit to BioBazar market\n14.30-15.00 Wrap-up key takeaways and goodbye drinks
